A
sepsis malignancies major trauma obstetric; -pre-eclampsia - placental abruption severe organ dysfunction; - acute pnareatitis - acute liver failure severe toxic or immune reaction; - transfusion reactions - organ transplant rejections - snake bite

how would you identify DIC?
A
bleeding from 3 unrelated sites in the context of one of the possible causes

what are the haematological features of DIC?
A
low platelets
prolonged APTT, PT and bleeding time
raised d-dimer
schistocytes on microscopy due to microangiopathic haemolytic anaemia

management of DIC?
A
treat underlying cause
heparin - stop blood cot formation
plasma transfusions - replace blood clotting factors
