Q

What is the dialysis fluid made up of?

A

The same concentration of mineral ions and glucose as the blood so there is no net movement of useful ions or glucose. Because the dialysis fluid contains normal plasma levels of mineral ions, any excess ions are moved out by diffusion. It also contains no urea which provides a steep gradient from the blood to the fluid- removing urea.
