depression for less than 2 months, distress less than 6 months before intensity should decrease. Pathologic grief extends beyond these time periods, and is charachterized by inability to move on, trust others, and re-engage in life
Cyclothymic disorder
dysthymia, hypomania, milder BP lasting at least 2 years
Manic episode
3/7 criteria lasting at least one week
Hypomanic episode
lasting at least 4 consecutive days
MDD
5/9 criteria for at least 2 weeks
typically an episode self- resolves after 6-12 months
Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia)
persistent depression, mild, lasting at least 2 yrs in adults, at least 1 yr in children and adolescents, with less than 2 months of being asymptomatic
Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder
irritable always, recurrent tantrums for at least a year, beginning before age 10, diagnosed between 6-18 years old.
postpartum blues
less than 10 days
postpartum depression
> 2 wks (typically to a year or more)
MDD with peripartum depression
begins during pregnancy, or within 4 weeks of delivery. Time requirement is still 2 weeks just like with non-peripartum MDD
Seasonal pattern MDD
> 2yrs, 2 major depressive episodes, no non-seasonal episodes of MDD during those 2 years
Somatic symptom disorder
DSM5: one system affected, patient with excessive anxiety and worry for more than 6 months.
