Diabetic Neuropathies Flashcards
Chronic progressive distal symmetric diabetic polyneuropathy
mixed sensory-autonomic-motor polyneuropathy; variants include small-fiber (painful), large-fiber (ataxic), and autonomic
Diabetic proximal motor neuropathy (diabetic amyotrophy)
severe thigh and back pain, followed within weeks by mild to severe hip and thigh muscle weakness with muscle atrophy (usually older TD2 pts)
Acute axonal diabetic polyneuropathy (intensely painful acute or subacute progressive symmetric sensory axonal peripheral neuropathy)
Diabetic neuropathic cachexia often associated with weight loss; insulin neuritis (with improved control of hyperglycemia)
Diabetic mononeuropathy, radiculopathy, and polyradiculopathy
Can present with cranial neuropathy (third, fourth and sixth nerves), multisegmental truncal radiculopathy or limb mononeuropathy
Focal compression neuropathies associated with diabetes
diabetic patietns are more susceptible to compression neuropathies such as median nerve at the wrist, ulnar nerve at the elbow and peroneal nerve at the knee
