DI causes
-damage to hypothalamus or pituitary (head trauma, stroke, surgical comps)
-tumors like pituitary tumors
-brain infection
-medication
-pregnancy
S/Sx of DI
-polyuria
-polydipsia
-dehydration symptoms
-urine dilutes
-hypotension
-extreme fatigue, muscle pain, weakness
-hypernatremia
diagnosing DI
-history of one of the causes
-fluid deprivation test
-monitor urine & serum osmolarity
-check ADH levels
ADH levels should be????
1-5 picograms/mL
DI nursing management
-monitor for hydration & electrolyte abnormalities
-restrict food that promotes diuresis
-DI medication admin & management
-patient education & safety (teach partner signs and symptoms, keep meds with them at all times, medical alert bracelet)
complication with treating DI?
possible water intoxication
