Diabetes Flashcards
signs of type I diabetes
Can detect autoantibodies many years before onset of disease.
metabolic changes in type I diabetes
Increase in gluconeogenesis, increase in glycogenolysis, decreased glycolysis, promote ketogenesis.
metabolic changes in type II diabets
Metabolic syndrome (hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension) – can result in coronary artery disease and stroke. Insulin increases Na retention, thus high BP.
signs of hypoglycemia
tachy
sweating
tremors
confusion blurred vision
diabetic ketoacidosis
insulin deficiency causes mobilization of energy stores which includes ketogenesis and thus metabolic acidosis. More common in Type I.
how do you treat diabetic keotacidosis
restoring plasma vol., reduce glucose, correct acidosis, replenish electrolytes.
common measurements used to monitor glycemic control
Cap blood testing, urine ketone testing, cap ketone testing, glycated hemoglobin testing.
