Developmentally Based Nursing Care Flashcards
Pediatric weights are always in what?
kilograms
“Falling off the curve” on the growth curve chart, can also be called what?
failure to thrive
How is a pediatric patient labeled with failure to thrive?
must have 2 plots at 2 different times under the curve
What are the two types of failure to thrive?
organic and nonorganic
What are some examples of organic failure to thrive?
-we have a reason why-
malnourishment, lack of understanding by the care taker, medical condition, and/or genetics
What is the reason for nonorganic failure to thrive?
if everything we test comes back normal, we assume some form of abuse has occurred
What is the first thing we will see if we suspect poor development?
weight change
What is something we have to consider when we are plotting preemies on the growth curve chart?
corrected age
What is the range for green of the growth curve chart? What kind of education is needed?
5-85%
-these kiddos and caregivers are doing good, keep it up
What is the range for yellow on the growth curve chart? What kind of education is needed?
85-95%
-education is key because these kiddos are considered pre-obese
What does orange cover on the growth curve chart? What kind of education is needed?
<5%
- typically education has been miscommunicated or something more serious is going on
- these kiddos will be back in a couple of weeks for a recheck
What does red cover on the growth curve chart? What kind of education is needed?
> 95%
-these kiddos are considered obese and are typically overfed
In which 2 directions does an infant grow?
- head to toe= cephalocaudal
- from center outward= proximodistal
Who are the 3 theorist we talk about?
Erikson, Piaget and Kohlberg
What is Erikson’s main focus?
Stages “Steps” of Psychosocial Development
What are the steps in Erikson’s Psychosocial Development?
- Infant- Trust vs Mistrust
- Toddler- Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt
- Preschool- Initiative vs Guilt
- School Age- Industry vs Inferiority
- Adolescent- Identity vs Role Confusion
What is Piaget’s main focus?
Cognitive Development
What are the 4 stages in Piaget’s Cognitive Development?
- Sensorimotor= the (0-2 year old) child begins to interact with the environment
- Preoperational= the (2-6/7 year old) child begins to represent the world symbolically
- Concrete Operational= the (7-11/12 year old) child learns rules such as conservation
- Formal Operational= the adolescent (12-adulthood) can transcend the concrete situation and think about the future
What is the main focus of Kohlberg’s theory?
Moral Development
-right vs wrong and values
What is cultural competence?
the goal is to improve the ability of health care providers and health care systems to communicate effectively with and provide quality health care to patients from diverse social backgrounds
What is cultural humility?
process of self-reflection to promote honest and trustworthy relationships–knowing one’s self better in order to know others
