developmental disorders Flashcards
caused by an abnormality in genetic makeup (genes and chromosomes)
inherited disorder
present at birth
may be inherited or developmental; the cause of most of these abnormalities is unknown
congenital disorder
an abnormal fluid-filled, epithelium-lined sac or cavity; found throughout the body, including the head and neck region; classified as to whether they are odontogenic or nonodontogenic
developmental cysts
forms around crown of unerupted or developing tooth; epithelial lining originates from the reduced enamel epithelium after crown has formed and calcified; most commonly around the crown of unerupted or impacted third molar
dentigerous cyst(follicular cyst)
odontogenic cyst around crown of unerupted tooth; circumscribed unilocular lesion; involved tooth may be displaced; mand. 3rd molars; cortical expansion; surgical enucleation and extraction
dentigerous cyst
found in the soft tissue around the crown of an erupting tooth; extraosseus
eruption cyst
develops in the place of a tooth; third molar; originates from remnants and degeneration of enamel organ; tooth was never present
primordial cyst
characterized by histologic appearance and frequent recurrence; most often seen in mandibular third molar region; can move teeth and cause resorption; high recurrence rate**
odontogenic keratocyst
nonaggressive cystic lesion lined by odontogenic epithelium; closely resembles ameloblastoma; ghost cells
calcifying odontogenic cyst
most often seen in mandibular canine and premolar area; radiolucent lesion on lateral surface of a tooth; intraosseous; developmental cyst between the roots of adjacent teeth; may cause divergence of roots; between mandibular pm and max lateral incisor and canine
lateral periodontal cyst
small bulge or swelling of attached gingiva or interdental papillae; extraosseous
gingival cyst
located within nasopalatine canal or incisive papilla; small pink bulge near apices between roots of max central on lingual surface; heart shaped; teeth are vital
nasopalatine canal cyst(incisive canal cyst)
arises from embryologic remnants of nasopalatine duct; teeth are asymptomatic and vital
nasopalatine canal cyst
well defined unilocular radiolucency; located in midline of hard palate; found more posterior than nasopalatine duct cyst; posterior to palatal rugae
median palatine cyst
well defined pear shaped radiolucency found between roots of max lateral incisor and canine; ; can cause divergence of roots
globulomaxillary cyst
rare lesion located in midline of mandible; below apices of mandibular incisors
median mandibular cyst
soft tissue cyst; thought to originate from lower anterior portion of nasolacrimal duct; 40 to 50,year old females; expansion or swelling in mucobuccal fold in area of max canine and floor of nose
nasolabial cyst
