Developmental Anomalies of Teeth Flashcards
1
Q
2 stages of enamel development
A
- secretory phase: ameloblasts produce enamel matrix and begin mineralisation
- maturation phase: withdrawal of water/ protein from enamel with concomitant increase in mineral content
2
Q
define:
- hypoplastic enamel
- hypomineralised enamel
A
- hypoplastic enamel: ameloblasts don’t produce enough enamel matrix (secretory phase)
- hypomineralised enamel: ameloblasts don’t fully mineralise the matrix (maturation phase)
3
Q
4 local causes of hypoplastic/ hypomineralised enamel
A
- infection
- trauma (eg turner tooth)
- irradiation
- idiopathic (enamel opacities)
4
Q
generalised environmental causes of hypoplastic/ hypomineralised enamel
A
- prenatal: rubella/ syphilis
- neonatal: hypocalcaemia/ prolonged labour/ premature birth
- postnatal: measles/ chicken pox/ vit A,C,D deficiency, fluorosis (>2ppm), chemotherapy
5
Q
genetic causes of hypoplastic/ hypomineralised enamel
A
- teeth only: amelogenesis imperfecta
- generalised disease: ectodermal dysplasia, epidermolysis bullosa, down’s syndrome
6
Q
other word for environmental causes
A
chronological
7
Q
what causes chronological hyperplasia
A
measles
8
Q
what disorders do/ don’t increase caries risk
A
DON’T: amelogenisis/ dentinogenesis imperfecta
DO: dens in dente
