Developmental 1 + Psychodynamic: Freud Flashcards
What did Freud say personalities were divided into?
What disorders can occur?
ID (unconscious)= selfish, pleasure •Psychopath Superego (all 3)= morals •Eating disorders, anxiety Ego (conscious+pre)= realistic •Bi polar
What was the background?
FREUD=7 psychosexual stages
- Oral (old)= pleasure through mouth
- Anal (age)= pleasure through poo
- Phallic (pensioners)= Oedipus and Electra where pleasure from parent
- Latency (love)= hobbies and sport
- Genital (Guinness)= sexual activities
What was the aim?
To use Hans’ case as evidence for Freud’s theory of psychosexual stages and use psychoanalytical theory to cure Hans’ phobias.
How did Hans’ become a pp?
What are the issues of this?
His father contacted Freud to ask for help to cure Hans’ obsession with his ‘widdler’.
•1 PP= low reliability
•father supportive of Freud’s theory
How was data gathered by Freud?
What are the pros and cons?
- Hans’ father’s accounts of behaviour and language
✔️detailed data
✖️highly biased as supportive+Father - Questioning Hans’
✔️draw conclusions on cause+effect
✖️demand characteristics e.g Hans’ not being as explicit about dreams
What were Hans’ anxieties about?
What were the descriptions why, Freud’s explanations and alternatives?
- TOWARDS MOTHER
•threatened to castrate ‘widdler’
•F= sexual arousal of sleeping with mother (phallic stage)
•Fromm= caused by threats to leave - TOWARDS SISTER (Hanna)
•drowning in the bath
•F= death wish caused by jealousy - TOWARDS FATHER
•fear of being castrated
•F= Oedipus, wants father to leave
What were Hans’ phobias?
What were the reasons why, Freud’s explanation and alternatives?
1. HORSES •scared a white horse will bite him •F= horse is father as blinkers are glasses, hair is moustache Biting= castration •Fromm= fear of mother leaving
- FEAR OF SISTER DROWNING
- HORSE AND CART
What were Hans’ dreams/fantasies?
What were the reasons why, Freud’s explanation and alternatives?
- GIRAFFES
•Hans’ took a crumpled giraffe from a bigger one and sat on it which made the bigger one cry out
•F= taking m away from f (Oedipus) - PLUMBER
•Plumber replaced bottom and widdler with bigger versions
•F= wanting to be like Father
•Fromm= Hans wishes to be grown up - MOTHER
•Having kids with mother+his father being the grandfather
•F= Oedipus
How did the evidence support Freud’s Oedipus theory?
- Hans’ want to sleep in bed with mother= sexual desire for M
- Fear of castration= wanting F to leave
- Plumber fantasy= resolution of wanting to be like F
What are some positive evaluations?
✔️shows how Freudian theory can be expressed practically
✔️Hans’ compared to a ‘normal’ person and differences identified
✔️Basis for further research
What are some negative evaluations?
✖️Hans not given informed consent
✖️data highly researcher biased
✖️father using leading q’s lowers validity as d.c
✖️action research= miss behaviours so lowers validity
✖️reductionist= only explained using psychosexual theory
What are the pros and cons of using a longitudinal study?
✔️Researchers can see change over time e.g how Hans’ fear is resolved
✔️Used to study developmental processes e.g psychosexual stages
✖️Often very expensive
✖️Order effects for subject e.g Hans bored by q’s so answered same
