What is HDI
Uses Gross National Income per capita, years of schooling and life expectancy at birth The best score is 1 and the poorest is 0
Why is HDI useful
Takes into account economic and social factors, single factors are limited to only one aspect of development, calculated from 0-1 so easy to compare, an increase means a country is becoming more developed
What are the reasons why some countries are more developed than others
Natural resources, debt, colonisation, natural disasters, government, landscape, educational system and healthcare
Explain natural resources
Countries with lots of natural resources can sell them for profit
Explain debt
Countries that are in debt cannot spend money on developing their own country
Explain colonisation
Many countries that had been colonised had all their resources taken away meaning they have minimal to sell
Explain natural disasters
Countries that deal with a lot of natural disasters have spend more money in recovering than on developing
Explain governments
Developed countries often have stable governments that allocate revenue for the benefit of their citizens, reducing wealth and health disparities
Explain landscape
Some countries cannot make food because elf their soil weather or teh relief
Explain educational system
Nations with well-established and accessible education systems tend to have a more skilled and productive workforce
Explain healthcare
Countries with good healthcare can focus on other things and their people will be healthier and more productive
