Glaciated upland areas Flashcards
What is the name of our case study
Loch Lomond and the Trossachs national park
How is a glacier formed
When lots of snow falls and compacts together to make a large body of ice
What is a corrie
A large bowl-shaped hollow located on the north and north -east facing slopes of mountains
What is an Arête
A sharp knife-edged ridge typically found in mountain regions resulting from the erosion of two neighbouring corries.
What is a pyramidal peak
a distinctive mountain landform that resembles a pyramid or cone-shaped peak. It has steep, triangular faces, typically formed at the intersection of multiple aretes.
What is a u-shaped valley
Distinct valleys with a broad flat floor and steep sides resembling the letter U
What is plucking
The glacier attaches to loose rocks on the face of a mountain and pull them away which resu,ts in steeper landforms
What is abrasion
These loose rocks from plucking scrape against the face of the mountain like sandpaper deepening and smoothening the mountain
What is freeze thaw weathering
Water infiltrates cracks within rocks over time this water freezes and expands causing the rock to crack or shatter.
