Weather Flashcards
What are the factors that influence weather
Latitude, altitude, aspect, distance from the sea
What does tropical maritime air mass bring
warm and wet conditions
What does tropical continental air mass bring
hot and dry conditons
What does the polar maritime air mass bring
cold, wet and windy
What does the polar continental air mass bring
cold and dry conditons
What does arctic maritime air mass bring
cold and wet conditons
How would a tropical continental air mass affect Britons
Droughts, ice cream sales rise, people head to the beach, difficult to do physical work outside, grass could die causing problems for farmers, hosepipe bans
Affects of arctic maritime air mass on Britons
Blocking of road, car crashes in unsafe conditions, increased energy prices so people stay warm, closing of schools, people suffer from hypothermia,
What does an anticyclone/ high pressure system bring in winter
Lack of cloud allowing heat to escape, cold temperatures, gentle winds(isobars spaced far apart), wind blows clockwise
What does an anticyclone/high pressure system bring in summer
Warm, dry, little wind
What is stage 1 of a depression
Before the depression the conditions are calm and pleasant and relatively warm and no rain but cirrus clouds begin to float about
What is stage 2 of a depression
At the warm front where warm air meets cold air and rises above it due to the warm air being lighter their is steady rained and temperatures begin to rise while the clouds get thicker
What is stage 3 of a depression
The warm sector is a region of warmer air between the hot and cold front. Hot air begins to rise forming cumulonimbus clouds and conditions tend to be dry but some rain is possible
What is stage 4 of the depression
The cold front hits as cold air moves in and undercuts the hot air. The cumulonimbus clouds are now fully formed resulting in heavy rain as the temperature drops as the cold air is dominant
What is stage 5 of the depression
After the depression cold air continues to dominate and temperatures reach their lowest while the cumulonimbus shrink to form cumulus clouds there is also prolonged rain
What happens during an occluded front
Sometimes a depression brings an occluded front where the cold front catches up with the warm front causing a rise in pressure and a change in wind direction
