How was the arts and craft movement influential?

A

-The arts and crafts movement was started in 1887
-The arts and craft movement refers to handcraft such as architecture, furniture, textiles, pottery, metal glasswork, et cetera
-The characteristics of the art and craft movement include: Gothic influences, stained glass, mimic cream, intricate patterns, organic shapes, and nature as subjective matter
-The arts and crafts movement came from placed in beauty in order to fight against the way industrial machines could ruin the aesthetics for both artists and customers, it came from an increase in understanding that society needed to adopt a different set of priorities in relation to the manufacturer of objects.
-came after the Industrial Revolution “ruined” design by designing products with no life or personality, due to the loss of traditional skills eg. Carpentry

How was the art deco movement influential?

A

-The art deco movement began around 1920 as artists were inspired to produce designs which symbolise luxury and progress
-the end of ww1 signaled a new beginning for the modern world, from which the art deco movement was developed, as it built upon simple and affordable style for society coming away from ww1.
-aswell as this moddern and mass techniques were used in ww1 which resulted in the production of simple and geometrical forms.
-The art deco movement was all about individual luxury items, Focused mainly on decorative arts.
-The decorative art style consisted of simple, geometric, streamed- lined, vibrant colour palettes.
-an example of a product/ architecture made in the Art deco movement will be the Chrysler building.
-art deco was influenced by mass production and the idea of African carvings and Egyptian motifs.

How was the moddernism movement influential?

A

-The modernism movement started in around the early 1900s and went onto around 1940.
-The modernism movement started from the idea of the word, being fundamentally rethought after ww1. The movement strayed away from original art forms (arts, and crafts movement) and more towards simplistic modern designs.
-colourful, simple, individual, modern, etc.

How was the post moddernism movement influential?
-Memphis

A

-post modernism movement started in around the 1970s- 1990s and is a rejection of the formal structures established by modernism. (Rebellion against the ideas that modernism brought)
-post modernism is about the looks of a product— form over function.
-used a lot of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic features (human and animal shapes).
-features: abstract, random combinations of geometric forms, colourful, over the top, used a lot of non traditional materials eg. Plastic laminates, neon tubes, etc

How was the Bauhaus era influential
— modernism

A

-stared around 1920 and went on until 1930s ish
-believed in function over form
-influenced by the First World War, which influenced the idea of geometric pure forms.
-Bauhaus was a design school, embraced function and mass production.
-“ everyday products for everyday people”
-The movement used a lot of modern materials at the time such as tubular steel
-designer—Marcel Breuer
