Diagnostic Criteria - Atopic Eczema
Itching + three or more of:
- Visible/history of flexural rash
- History of atopy
- Dry skin
- Onset <2 years old
Management - Atopic Eczema (Mild)
Emollients
Mild topical steroids
Management - Atopic Eczema (Moderate)
Emollients
Moderate topical steroids
Consider topical calcineurin inhibitors and bandaging
Management - Atopic Eczema (Severe)
Emollients
Potent topical corticosteroids
Consider topical calcineurin inhibitors, bandaging, phototherapy and oral corticosteroids
Definition - Contact Allergic Dermatitis
A type 4 hypersensitivity reaction caused by an allergen that comes in contact with the skin e.g. nickel, latex
Presentation - Contact Allergic Dermatitis
Skin changes confined to the site of allergen contact
Erythema
Itchy, blistered, dry, cracked skin
Diagnosis - Contact Allergic Dermatitis
Patch testing
Management - Contact Allergic Dermatitis
Avoidance of triggers
Emollients
Topical corticosteroids for severe disease
Histology Findings - Contact Allergic Dermatitis
Spongiotic dermatitis

Superinfection of eczema with HSV

Herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2
Patient Group - Eczema Herpeticum
Infants/children with dermatitis
Presentation - Eczema Herpeticum
A rapidly progressive painful rash = monomorphic, punched out lesions
Fever
Irritability
Lymphadenopathy

Viral swabs + PCR
Management - Eczema Herpeticum
Acyclovir IV
