Dentine and Pulp 1 Flashcards
what cells does the dental pulp have?
odontoblasts, fibroblasts and defence cells
what are the extracellular components of the dental pulp
collage, oxytalan, proteoglycans, chondroitin sulphate, dermatan sulphate
what are the nerves of the dental pulp
sensory autonomic (sympathetic)
what cells are next to the cell free zone?
odontoblasts
what are the functions of the dental pulp?
nutritive, dentine growth, dentine repair, defence, neural
what are the links between dentine and pulp?
structural, functional and developmental
what is the developmental link between dentine and pulp?
they both develop from the dental papilla
what pulpal elements extend into dentine?
odontoblasts, nerve terminals, immune cells, dentinal fluid
what direction does dentinal fluid go in?
from the pulp capillaries to the interstitial space where some drains to lymphatics and some passes along the dentinal tubules
what are the functional links between dentine and pulp?
formation of secondary dentine, formation of tertiary dentine in response to tooth wear, regulation of the exchange of material between dentine and pulp
what are the causes of tooth wear?
mastication, bruxism, abfraction, diet, caries, operative procedures
what are the two types of tertiary dentine?
reactionary dentine and reparative dentine
when is reactionary dentine laid?
laid in response to mild stimulus by primary odontoblasts
when is reparative dentine laid?
in response to intense stimulus that destroys primary odontoblasts and laid by secondary odontoblasts
what is the function of tertiary dentine
it is a plug sealing dentinal tubules from access to the pulp and therefore protecting the vital tissue from exterior threat
