DEMOGRAPHY (Iris Transes) Flashcards
Scientific or statistical study of human population
Demography
Group of individuals of same species living in the same geographic area at a certain time
Population
no. of people in a geographic area at the certain time
Population Size
way of dispersion of people in each geographic location at a certain time.
Distribution
refers to the no. of people in age, sex, or other demographic categories.
Composition
study of change in the population in size or structure
Population dynamics
❖ Defined as an enumeration or complete population count at a point in time within a specified geographical area.
❖ Entire process of collecting, compiling, evaluating, analyzing, publishing, and disseminating data to people
Cencus
❖ Two techniques of conducting cencus:
o Dejure
o Defacto
counting of people according to the permanent place of location or residence; more useful because it gives a permanent picture/location of person.
o Dejure
conducting cencus referring to counting of persons where they are present at the time of the cencus period; disadvantage for people who travel.
o Defacto
❖ Monitor population of group
❖ Refers to the civil registration
system, which records births, deaths, marriages etc. (vital statistics), enables rates of population growth to be calculated.
❖ Population growth and population decline
Registration of vital events
❖ Carried out in a scientifically selected area which covers only a section or portion (sample) of the population under consideration.
Sample Surveys
August to September 2015, very remarkable Cencus record

❖ Quotient of two demographic quantities
❖ Quantifies the magnitude of one occurrence to another.
