Definitions Flashcards
Ion
Charged particle that is formed when an atom gains or loses electrons
Isotopes
Atoms that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
E.g same atomic no. And different mass no.
Ionic bond
An electrostatic force of attraction between positively charged ions and negatively charged ions.
Element
Made up of only one type of atom
Half life
Time taken for half of the atoms in a radioisotope to turn into the new isotope/element
Covalent bonds
A shared pair of electrons between two non metal atoms
Compound
A compound is when two or more atoms are chemically bonded together
Isomers
Compounds that have the same molecular formula but a different structural formula.
Metallic bonding
The electrostatic attraction between positively charged metal ions and delocalised electrons. This holds atoms together.
