Covalent bonding Flashcards
Occurs between
Non metal + non metal
What is the definition of a covalent bond
A shared pair of electron between two non metal atoms
How are the atoms held together
Because of the electrostatic fore of attraction between the positive nuclei of each atom and the negatively charged electrons
What is a diatomic element
Element made up of two of the same atoms
Name all the diatomic element and which have double/triple bonds
All of group 7
Oxygen
Nitrogen
Hydrogen
Why do they turn into the 4 shapes
Electrons repel when next to another shared one. This is because they are negatively charged.
What are the 4 shapes they turn into
Tetrahedral
Triagonal pyramidal
Angular
Linear
Name 4 key points about covalent molecular bonds
- low melting points
- do not dissolve in water
- do not conduct electricity - no charged particles
- lots of CB make a covalent network
- only a few make a discrete
Name 3 covalent networks
- boron
- carbon
- silicon
Name 2 covalent network compounds
- silicon dioxide
- silicon carbide
