Definitions Flashcards
axial skeleton
bones which lie around the central axis - ribs/sternum/spine etc
appendicular skeleton
bones of the free appendages - upper/lower extremities etc
process
any body prominence
tuberosity
large, rounded projection, may be roughened
crest
narrow ridge of bone, usually prominent
trochanter
v large, blunt, irregularly shaped process
line
narrow ridge of bone, less prominent than a crest
tubercle
small rounded projection or process
epicondyle
raised area of condyle, bump of a joint
spine/spinous process
sharp, slender, often pointed projection
head
bony expansion carried on a narrow neck
facet
smooth, nearly flat articular process
condyle
rounded articular projection
ramus
armlike bar of bone
meatus
canal-like passageway
sinus
cavity within a bone, filled with air and lined with mucus membrane
fossa
shallow, basin-like depression in a bone, often serving as an articular surface
groove
furrow
fissure
narrow, slit-like opening
foramen
round or oval opening through a bone
Long Bone - 3 points
greater length than width, diaphysis & 2 epiphyses, sightly curved for strength
Flat Bone - 3 points
thin, composed of 2 or more parallel plates of compact bone enclosing spongy bone, afford protection and large surface area for attachment of muscles
Short Bone - 3 points
cube shaped, nearly equal in length and width, spongy in texture except at their surface of compact bone
Irregular Bone - 2 points
complex in shape, don’t fit into the other 3 groups
Sesamoid Bone - 2 points
small bones found in tendons where there has been considerable stress - e.g. wrist, patella
