What are some risk factors for DVT?
Age, pregnancy, trauma, previous DVT, obesity, immobility
What are some signs of DVT?
Unilateral calf pain, warmth, swelling, redness, ankle oedema
What should you do first?
Wells score
What should you do if the Wells score is equal to or under 1?
Perform D-dimer
What should you do if the Wells score is equal to or greater than 2?
Proximal leg USS
What is D-dimer?
A small protein fragment present in blood after a clot is degraded
What is the main complication of DVT?
PE
What is DVT associated with?
Contraceptive pill, long haul flights, leg fractures, malignancy
When can d-dimer also be positive?
Cancer, pregnancy, post-op
What tests are available?
D-dimer, USS, Doppler US
What treatments are available?
LMWH, oral warfarin, DOAC, compression stockings
What should the INR target be on warfarin?
2.5
