decopling Flashcards
Decoupling is essential for achieving green growth
What is decoupling?
De-linking environmental degradation
and resource consumption from economic growth
For global sustainability, we need decoupling that is:
Global
Absolute
Fast-enough
Long-enough
Relative decoupling
Decline in resource intensity (e.g.
CO2 emissions per unit of GDP)
Decoupling is said to be relative when the growth rate of the environmentally relevant variable is positive, but less than the growth rate of the economic variable.
Absolute decoupling:
Absolute decline in resource
consumption (e.g. total CO2 emissions)
Absolute decoupling is said to occur when the environmentally relevant variable is stable or decreasing while the economic driving force is growing.
ex of absolue decoupling
European Union, between 1990 and 2017, carbon emissions fell by 22% even as the economy grew by 58%
what we need and don’t have is for global decoupling
