Deck 3 (Week 4) Flashcards
Pulmonary
What are pulmonary diseases?
A disease that affects the lungs and any other part of the respiratory system.
Define a Restrictive Pulmonary Disease
Difficulty for the lungs to expand quickly, prevents full inhalation
Define an Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Interference with exhalation (you can hear wheezing, coughing etc.)
What is Asthma?
Constriction and Inflammation of the Airways.
What is Dyspnea?
Laboured Breathing
What % of the population suffers from Asthma?
Roughly 10% suffer from Asthma
What is Tidal Volume (TV)?
Basic resting inhalation + exhalation
What is Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV)?
Maximal breath in and full exhalation
What is Residual Volume (RV)?
The leftover air in the lungs (since lungs never fully deflate)
Up to what % of total blood does the respiratory system use during high intensity exercise?
Up to 30%!!!
What is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and is it reversible?
Limitation of air flow and is NOT reversible.
What is Chronic Bronchitis?
Increased number and size of mucus glands in the airways and/or a cough lasting longer than 3 months.
What is Cystic Fibrosis?
A Genetic condition that impacts both the respiratory system and digestive system.
What is the ideal training environment for asthmatics?
A warm, humid environment free of pollutants and allergens.
What medications are responsible for the breakdown of mucus?
Mucolytics.
Is Epinephrine an effective prescription for vasodilation.
Yes!
What are the main goals for COPD patients when it comes to exercise?
To maintain functional capacity and to maintain exercise tolerance.
Patients with asthma can perform any physical test. True or False?
True, however the appropriate medication must be readily available.
What is the #1 modality in term of exercise for people with asthma?
Swimming due to the humid environment.
What are the main goals for those with COPD?
To improve overall physical function and to maintain performance of ADL by reducing symptoms of the disease
Can aerobic and strength training be prescribed to someone with Cystic Fibrosis?
Yes!
What is O2 desaturation
Drops in blood oxygen level
What is the FEV1:FVC Ratio?
It represents the proportion of a person’s vital capacity that they are able to expire in the first second of forced expiration to the full, forced vital capacity.
At what rep ranges is preferable for resistance training for COPD patients?
Around the 10-12 or higher rep ranges.
