31 BCE
Octavian celebrates a triple triumph over the Dalmatians, Egypt, and Actium.
29 BCE
The First Settlement. Octavian proclaimed Augustus, given proconsular control of military provinces, given the clupeus virtutis and duo laureae. Augustus establishes the consilium (advisory body of senators and magistrates) to placate the senate.
27 BCE
The Second Settlement. After a serious illness, Augustus resigns the consulship, given tribunican power, the right to call the Senate, ius referendi, proconsular authority in all senatorial provinces (?). Marcellus, the nephew of Augustus, dies.
22 BCE
Tiberius negotiates the return of the Parthian standards.
20 BCE
Agrippa dies.
12 BCE
Drusus, brother of Tiberius, dies.
9 BCE
Forum of Augustus and Temple of Mars Ultor dedicated. Tiberius leaves for self-imposed exile in Rhodes.

Jesus born. Weary world rejoices.

Gaius Caesar, grandson of Augustus, dies. Augustus has now had five heirs die on him (Marcellus, Agrippa, Drusus, Lucius, Gaius) and so with great reluctance he adopts Tiberius, his stepson.

Revolt of Arminius. The Varrusschlact, conquest in N. Europe grinds to a halt. Papian Poppaean Law added to Augustus’ marriage reforms: fathers are given precedence among political candidates.

Augustus and Julia the Elder die. Tiberius emperor. The first of two years of retaliatory campaigning against the Germans by Germanicus.

19: Germanicus dies in the East in mysterious circumstances (C. Piso).
AD 19
23: Drusus, son of Tiberius, dies. Sejanus moves the praetorian camp to the eastern part of Rome.

Tiberius leaves for Capri. He will never see Rome again.

Sejanus is killed in vexingly obscure circumstances.

Tiberius dies, Caligula (Gaius) emperor.
