Cysts and Odontogenic Tumors Part 1 Flashcards
what is a cyst
epithelial lined pathologic cavity
what are the 3 components to a cyst
- epithelial lining
- lumen
- wall
what are the developmental non-odontogenic cysts
- nasopalatine duct cyst
- median palatine cyst
describe the nasopalatine duct cyst
- incisve canal cyst
- most common non- odontogenic cyst of oral cavity
- a developmental cyst that arises from epithelial remnants of nasopalatine duct
- vital teeth
- adults 4th-6th decades
which is larger nasopaaltine duct cyst or incisve
nasopalatine
what are the symptoms associated with nasopalatine duct cyst
- radiolucency 0.6cm is the upper limit of normal for the incisive foramen
- swelling of anterior palate
- drainage and pain if inflamed
describe median palatine cyst
- well circumscribed palatal lucency
- epithelium entrapped during fusion of palatal shelves
- stratified squamous or pseudostratified columnar
- may be difficult to distinguish from nasopalatine duct cyst
- also in midline
what is the difference between median palatine cyst and nasopalatine cyst
median palatine cyst is more posterior
what are the odontogenic cysts
- inflammatory cysts
- developmental cysts
- PA cysts
- residual cysts
- buccal bifurcation cyst
describe PA cysts
- associated with apex of non vital tooth
- arises from rests of malassez
- has to occur at apex or where lateral canal is
if rests of malassez dont proliferate you get:
a PA granuloma
what is a residual cyst
a cyst left behind
what is special about residual cysts compared to other jaw cysts
incidence of malignancy is higher
describe a buccal bifurcation cyst
- paradental cyst
- buccal bifurcation of vital mandibular molar teeth with cervical enamel projection
what are the developmental odontogenic cysts
- dentigerous cysts
- eruption cysts
- dental lamina cyst
- odontokeratocyst
- calcifying odontogenic cyst
- glandular odontogenic cyst
