Cystic fibrosis Flashcards
Besides the respiratory complications of cystic fibrosis, what other system is affected?
the GI system
What type of enzymes can be given to help improve digsetion?
pancreatic enzymes (the enzymes have to be sprinkled on their food and snacks every time they eat… don’t want the enzymes to touch the lips or it can burn the lips)
what type of diet should a child with cystic fibrosis be on?
HIGH CALORIE
HIGH PROTEIN
Describe the stools of a patient with cystic fibrosis
steatorhea (fatty and frothy) they are not absorbing the fat
what is the diagnostic test for CF?
sweat chloride test (The sweat test measures the amount of chloride in sweat. Kids with cystic fibrosis can have two to five times the normal amount of chloride in their sweat. In a sweat test, the skin is stimulated to produce enough sweat to be absorbed into a special collector and then analyzed)
How is CF usually discovered?
someone is kissing the baby and the baby tastes very salty (losing sodium on their skin)
the child is at risk for what electrolyte imbalance?
Hyponatremia
In the newborn, what is the earliest sign that the baby may have CF?
baby never passes the meconium (meconium illeus) because mucous secretion in CF is thick and sticky
is CF inherited?
yes; but you must get the gene from each parent.
when you think about CF, the first thing to think about is the ___ ___ secretions everwhere.
the first place these secretions would be is in the___
the 2nd place to think of is the____
- thick sticky
- lungs
- GI tract
SO, we have a child that will need intensive physiotherapy every day to help them___
- because the secretions are thick and sticky, the pancreatic enzymes get trapped in them, so they must ingest them through food*
mobilize the secretions
