Cylinders Flashcards
En route
Safe route and siting Possibility of acetylene Use of overlay Surrounding risks RVP Any additional info
Initial actions ID
If involved Type Contents Size Number Location
DRA
If can confirm; 1/ fire extinguished 2/ cylinder not acetylene 3/All located 4/ All receiving direct cooling Then only need cordon to maintain SSOW. If not then full cylinder proc.
Composite
Allow contents to burn off and protect surrounding risks and gas dispersal.
If resin still intact extinguish fire and cool cylinder.
If can’t confirm composite, it may have aluminium liner, there treat as steel cylinder.
Steel Cylinder
•If risk failure (300 oC) 200m HZ. Substantial cover may allow reduction.
Consider time to implement this against time to cool cylinder.
• If not risk failure just need size HZ to allow SSOW.
•Extinguish Fire & cool cylinder to ambient temp as assessed by TIC, and check not leaking ( sound of air escaping or bubbling). Then remove HZ..
Send message stating highest temp and HZ removed, TM.
Acetylene
•200m HZ
•Cool 1hr
•CAP - TIC, steaming drying out, leave 15 mins, spray water.
Do this 4 X = 1hr.
• HMEPO can advise on reducing HZ after 1st successful test in CAP
• If not ambient temp reapply 1hr cooling and CAP
•If cylinder is at ambient temp it is not at risk of failure providing;
1/ not reheated
2/ not moved or disturbed during CAP
3/ cooled & monitor until CAP passed
• If passed hand over to RP
HMEPO at Acetylene Inc.
Must maintain log and record; 1/ cylinder location 2/ time cooling start & finish 3/time of CAP and temp readings 4/ All decisions during cooling 5/ If Req. CP and their advice.
Log must be handed to subsequent HMEPO or IC if not available. Final one must send it back to initial HMEPO.
Cylinder alight at valve group
Before attempt to ext fire assess if can close valve. BA, 45mm, ext flame, close valve.
If heated it should be cooled bring careful not to ext flame.
Leaking cylinder
- Treat as hazmat
- close valve if possible
- If not monitor atmosphere
- Consider RRT, FRU, HMEPO
Assistance
HMEPO can consult BCGA and SA. CP can advise on; 1/ no of cylinders delivered to property 2/support decision making 3/ arrange to collect at end.
Hazard zone management.
- can only work in HZ following RA by IC & HMEPO.
- IC in consult with HMEPO decide size.
- significant infrastructure routes left open only if substantial cover maintain safety.
Evac public
Can remain indoors If 100m away in HZ or those refusing to leave.
If refusing to leave pass details onto police.
