What does Furosemide treat? (4 things)
A
Oedema assoc w:
- CHF
- Cirrhosis
- HTN
- Pulmonary oedema (as adjunctive therapy)

What is the MOA of Furosemide? (2 steps)
A
- Inhibits Chloride reabsorption @ Distal Tubule (via Na-Cl cotransporter)
- This increases Excretion of: Na, Cl, H2O

Monitor electrolytes during tx

What are the Side fx of Furosemide? (7 things)
A
- Dizziness
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Metabolic alkalosis
- Muscle spasms
- Nausea

What are the CI for taking Furosemide? (4 things)
A
- Anuria (not weeing)
- Renal failure (bc nephrotoxic / hepatotoxic drugs)
- Severe hypokalaemia
- Severe hyponatraemia

When should Furosemide be used with Caution? (5 things)
A
- DM (can exacerbate)
- Gout (can exacerbate)
- Hypotension (correct b4 starting Furosemide)
- Hypovolaemia (correct b4 starting Furosemide)
- Urinary retention

How can Furosemide damage the Liver?
A
- Hypokalaemia –> Hepatic encephalopathy (–> Coma)
- Hypomagnesaemia (increases risk in cirrhosis) –> Arrhythmias

How can you prevent Hepatic encephalopathy induced by Hypokalaemia from Furosemide?
A
Potassium sparing diuretics
