Indications for Alpha blockers?
A
- Benign Prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
2. Add on treatment in resistant hypertension

What is the mechanism of action of alpha1 blockers?
A
- Highly selective for the alpha1 adrenoreceptor
- Alpha1 adrenoreceptors found in smooth muscle
- Stimulation=contraction, blockade = relaxation
- Alpha1 blockers cause vasodilation. Reduce resistance to bladder outflow.

adverse affects of alpha1 blockers?
A
- Postural hypotension
- Dizziness
- Syncope
- Prominent after first dose
- Should not be used in patients with postural
hypotension

Practical Prescribing?
A
- Doxazosin licensed for BPH and Hypertension
- Tamsulosin just for BP
- Normally taken at bedtime

Prescribing?
A
- Doxazosin 1mg then inc at 1-2 week intervals
2. Tamsulosin - 400mcgs daily
