CV Adenosine Flashcards
To learn about Adenosine
1
Q
What are the common diagnostic and therapeutic uses for Adenosine?
A
Supra ventricular tachycardia (SVT)
2
Q
What is the mechanism of action for adenosine?
A
- Agonist of adenosine receptors on cell surface
- Activation of G protein receptors reduce depolarization
- Slows sinus rate, conduction velocity
- Increases AV refractoriness
- Breaks re-entry circuit
- Induces cardio version
- Half life of Adenosine 10 secs
3
Q
How does giving it allows closer inspection of the atrial rhythm on ECG?
A
By blocking conduction to the ventricles
4
Q
What are the main adverse effects of Adenosine?
A
- Bradycardia
- Asystole
- Breathlessness: sinking feeling/impending doom
5
Q
What are the main warnings associated with Adenosine?
A
- Hypo tension
- Coronary ischemia
- Decompensated heart failure
- Avoid in asthma /COPD
6
Q
What are important drug reactions with Adenosine?
A
- Dipyridamole blocks uptake of adenosine, potentiating its effects. Dose should be halved
- Theophylline, aminophylline and caffeine are competitive antagonists therefore compete/reduce effects
7
Q
How is Adenosine prescribed?
A
- IV, written in once only section of drug chart
2. 6mg/12mg, if central line lower dose
