CUE: Urban Wind And Fogs Flashcards
1
Q
How is wind impacted by urban areas?
A
Urban structures interfere with wind by slowing, redirecting and disturbing air flow
•Buildings create friction and act as windbreaks resulting in wind speeds being 30% lower than in rural areas.
2
Q
How do urban areas affect wind?
A
- Urban canyons – narrow streets bordered by high buildings funnel and concentrate winds
- Venturi effect – a particularly violent form of gusting caused by very narrow gaps
3
Q
Why is fog and mist common in urban areas?

Fog (and mist) is encouraged in urban areas by the concentration of condensation nuclei –
- Especially during periods of cooler overnight temperatures.
- This was common during the industrial revolution
