Cue-dependancy theory of forgetting Flashcards
1
Q
Who’s theory was this?
A
Tulving’s
2
Q
When did Tulving argue that cue-dependent forgetting occurs?
A
When we have stored info but lack the necessary cues to retrieve it
3
Q
What else does it argue that we encode when we encode info?
A
we also encode details of the context and state we were in at the time we encoded the info
4
Q
what are the 2 types of cues?
A
- State cues
- Context cues
5
Q
What are context cues?
A
- cues from our external environment which improve the retrieval of memories
- For example we would retrieve info better in the same environment/place that we encoded it
6
Q
What are state cues?
A
- Cues taken from out internal physiological state present at encoding
- Therefore it argues that we retrieve info better if we are in the same emotional state that we encoded it in
7
Q
What are examples of state cues?
A
-Could include Happiness, Sadness being exited or even drunk
8
Q
What are examples of context cues?
A
-Could include smells, sounds and clearly visual cues
