CSF & Hydrocephalus Flashcards
what is hydrocephalus?
condition where there is excess CSF within the intracranial and inter ventricular spaces
where does CSF exit the fourth ventricle?
two foramina of Luschka
single foramen Magendie
where is CSF resorped?
back into the venous system through numerous arachnoid granulations along the dural venous sinuses
communicating hydrocephalus?
problem with CSF resorption
Non-communicating hydrocephalus?
physical obstruction to the normal flow of CSF before it leaves the ventricles
potential causes of NCH?
aqueduct stenosis, tumours, cysts, infection, haemorrhage
main treatment for hydrocephalus?
Surgery
External ventricular drain
Ventriculo-peritoneal shunt
Ventriculostomy
what is normal pressure hydrocephalus?
rare/preventable cause of dementia
symptoms in NPH?
urinary incontinence
gait disturbance
management of NPH?
CT/MRI Lumbar puncture (often see symptoms improve)
what order do symptoms improve in NPH?
gait>incontinence>memory
normal manometry pressures in lumbar puncture?
0-5 standing
8-20 lying
cautions in lumbar puncture?
coning
chiari malformations
