Brain Tumours Flashcards
primary brain tumours affect? (3)
neuroepithelial tissue (glioma, glioblastoma)
meninges (meningioma)
pituitary (adenoma)
common secondary due to?
renal cell carcinoma lung carcinoma breast carcinoma malignant melanoma GI tract
what are gliomas developed from?
astrocytes
structural and nutritional support to nerve cells
grade 4 glioma?
most common + aggressive
glioblastoma multiforme (GBM)
spread by tracking through white mater and CSF pathway
rare to systemic spread
what do meningiomas develop from?
arachnoid
meningioma?
slow growing
extra-axial usually benign
frequently occur along falx, convexity or sphenoid
most common pituitary tumour and presentation?
adenoma
presents with visual disturbance and hormone imbalance
clinical presentation?
raised ICP
focal neurological deficits
fits
normal CSF production?
400-450cc /day
management: GBM
complete excision impossible
steroids + anticonvulsants
radiotherapy
chemotherapy (temazolamide)
Prognosis: meningioma
commonly cured by surgery but may require anticonvulsants
Prognosis: astrocytoma
low grade has long life expectancybut high as around 1 yes
what is medulloblastoma a tumour of?
primitive neuroectoderm (primitive neural cells)
where is medulloblastoma most common?
posterior fossa
sheets of undifferentiated cells
what is acoustic neuroma?
nerve sheath tumour - benign lesion
unilateral deafness
