CSD 155 LAB 9: Cranium part 2 Flashcards
mandible
- unpaired (becomes a single bone by age 1 through fusion at the mental symphysis
parts of the mandible
- body: anterior transverse portion, horseshoe shaped
- ramus: posterior vertical portion
- angle of mandible: junction of the body and ramus
- mental symphysis: anterior point, where the two halves are fused together along the midline of the mandible
- mental protuberance: point of the chin
mandibular foramen
- hole on the medial surface of the ramus
mental foramen
- hole on the anterior lateral surface of the body
coronoid process
- anterior to condylar process, sharply angled anterior extension; anterior-superior point of ramus
mandibular condyle
- posterior-superior point of the ramus, communicates with temporal bone to form the temporomandibular joint
alveolar process
- on the superior surface of the body, sockets for the lower teeth
mandibular notch
- space between the coronoid process and the condyle process
maxillae
paired bone, upper face
parts of the maxillae
- body: central portion
- anterior nasal spine (ANS): anterior sharp process at the base of the nose
- maxillary tuberosity: posterior bulge behind the last upper molar
incisive foramen
small opening at midline of anterior hard palate
palatine process
anterior 3/4 of hard palate
zygomatic process
lateral processes which attach to the zygomatic bone
frontal process
superior processes, form the lateral bony framework of the nose
alveolar process
sockets for the upper teeth
alveolar ridge
anterior portion of the hard palate, immediately posterior to front teeth, place of articulation for many consonants
nasal crest
located at the midline of the superior surface of the palatine process, communicates with the vomer to form part of the nasal septum; longitudinal fgroove that runs fro the ANS to the posterior nasal spine
palatine bones
paired, posterior 1/4 of the hard palate, attaches anteriorly to the palatine processes of the maxillae
posterior nasal spine
sharp process at the posterior end of the palatine bones
vomer
unpaired, forms the inferior posterior portion of the nasal septum at the vertical midline, communicates with nasal crest, attaches superiorly to the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone to form the nasal septum
zygomatic bones
cheek bones, attach to zygomatic processes of the maxilla and temporal bones to form the zygomatic arch
nasal bones
paired, form the bridge of the nose
lacrimal bones
smallest facial bones, forms the medial wall of the orbital cavity
inferior nasal concha
forms the inferior part of the lateral nasal wall, larger than the middle and inferior nasal concha (which are part of the ethmoid bone)
