What is a central line used for and where is it placed?

A

Also called the “Hickman”, it is an IV line placed in the great vessel of the neck.
It is used to administer fluid meds and provides for more of a direct admission

Mnemonic: hicks are found mostly in the center of the country

What to be cautious of with arterial line?

A

The pt may be unable to bear weight through UE- so using a walker or a cane may be contraindicated.

What is the purpose of an endotracheal tube and where is it placed?

A

Inserted into the trachea to assist with breathing. It is usually temporary.

The pt will be unable to speak/communicate

A

Allow full cervical ROM, ability to sit and transfer

What is the purpose of a chest tube?

A

It assists in inflation of lungs and removes/measures debris.

The collection device needs to be positioned 1 inch below the chest AT ALL TIMES. If knocked over, turn upright and notify nurse.

  • It is very important for the patient to move but can be very painful

A

Nasogastric, gastromy, jejunum (J tube)- all named by location

What are the PT considerations when a pt has a feeding tube?

A

-Pt may be nauseous after a feed so wait 30 minutes
-Tubing must be disconnected during exercise and must confirm with nurse
-After feed, the HOB should never be below 30 degrees.

What should be considered with an ICP monitor?

A

The pt needs to stay level to the external auditory meatus. Pt is not able to move.

If PT is performed, the device needs to be recalibrated and nurse needs to be notified.
