Critical Care Flashcards
What is Cardiogenic shock?
Inability of the heart to propel blood, including diastolic failure or systolic failure.
What is the main cause of Hypovolemic shock?
Reduced circulating intravascular volume leading to decreased venous return to the heart (Preload) and decreased cardiac output (CO).
Define Hypoxic shock.
Adequate perfusion with inadequate O2 content or cellular utilization.
What characterizes Distributive shock?
Impairment of mechanisms regulating vascular tone with maldistribution of vascular volume and massive systemic vasodilation.
What happens to vascular resistance in Distributive shock?
Vascular resistance decreases, leading to inadequate blood volume and ‘relative hypovolemia’ and decreased venous return.
What is the effect of Distributive shock on afterload?
Decreased afterload.
Fill in the blank: Cardiogenic shock can result from ______ failure.
diastolic or systolic
True or False: Hypovolemic shock results from increased circulating intravascular volume.
False
What is the relationship between venous return and cardiac output in Hypovolemic shock?
Decreased venous return leads to decreased cardiac output.
Fill in the blank: In Hypoxic shock, perfusion is adequate, but the ______ content is inadequate.
O2
