what is crisis intervention?
A
- normal, natural reaction to an abnormal situation.
- this maybe injuries, sudden illness, or death.

what do you do if there is a physical assault?
A
- if you arrive on scene and there has been a physical assault, do not touch any weapons or anything laying on the ground (unless it poses a safety risk).
- make sure that you are safe and cannot be attacked.
- only make the interventions needed.

what are 7 things you should do if you are caring to someone who has been sexually assaulted?
A
- cover the patient and protect them from unnecessary exposure.
- have patient interact with responder of the same gender if possible. (ask patient who they feel most comfortable with)
- clear bystanders, family, friends from the area. (ask patient who or if they would like certain people to stay)
- only remove articles of clothing if ABSOLUTELY necessary.
- discourage the person from showering, bathing, or changing cloths bc there can be important DNA/ information for authorities to have to help assist better.
- treat the area as a crime scene
- don’t ask the patient about any specifics about what happened. provide the care that is necessary for medical or trauma.

A
- emotional support & care for injuries
- verbal and nonverbal communication
- speak in calm and reassuring manner
- avoid threatening body language.

what is a mental health crisis?
A
- a disorder of mood, thought, or behaviour that is dangerous or disturbing tot the patient or those near by.

how do you treat someone who is having a mental crisis?
A
- identify and care for injuries or illnesses & reduce harm.
- listen activily, hear what the other person is saying
- provide support and refer.

what is psychosis?
A
- this is a medical condition reflecting a disturbance in the brain function
- the individual will experience some loss of contact with reality, which can be seen with their thinking, beliefs, perception, and/or behaviours.

what are s/s of psychosis?
A
- loss of touch with reality
- false beliefs
- mania
- hallucinations
- confusion or disconnect thoughts.
- suicidal thoughts

how do you treat someone who is psychosis?
A
- request law enforcement
- don’t try and tell them what is and is not reality, let them tell you what it is.
- asses for potential violence.

what is anxiety?
A
- mental disorder in which the dominant mood is fear and apprehension.

s/s of anxiety?
A
- hyperventalation
- feeling weakness or faintness
- chest discomfort
- dizziness
- rapid heart rate
- sweating
- nausea
- smothering sensation
- fear of losing control.
