Great power rivalry in the middle East in the wake of the decline of the Ottoman Empire = shows expansionists aims of the Tsars
What were the Russian casulties?
- Russian causalities twice those of the British and French
What was Russia forced to agree on?
The closure of the Black Sea Straits to any power’s warships as had been the case before the war
Why was Russia humiliated?
Defeated on home territory
What was Russia’s failure attributed to?
Its Serf army + poor military technology

What reforms did the war lead to?
- Emancipation
- Judicial reforms
- Education opened up to all classes and women

How can it be argued that the Crimean War was a catalyst for change already on the way?
- Lots of revolts which lead to emancipation as Lords feared loosing land
- Liberals in the r/c who wanted reform e.g. Grand Duke Constantine
