Crash Course Notes Flashcards
Hormones that are always running through your body
Cascades
Hormones are mostly made of 2 substances:
Amino Acids
Lipids
These hormones can’t enter the cell and attach to receptors on the cell membrane
Water soluble hormones
hormone receptors are typically in the cytoplasm or nucleus of the cell
Lipid soluble hormones
Pancreatic cells responsible for the release of insulin
Beta cells
Pancreatic cells responsible for the release of glucagon
Alpha cells
Disease where the immune system creates antibodies that mimic thyroid hormones and cause the thyroid to overproduce; hyperthyroidism
Grave’s Disease
The Thyroid secretes hormones that control these 3 things :
Body temp
Skin moisture
O2, Calcium and Cholesterol levels in blood
Made of stratified squamous epithelial tissue; contains Langerhans cells (dendritic)
Epidermis
These cells are at the bottom of the epidermis and wrapped around nerves
Merkel Cells
Layers of the epidermis : CLGSB
Stratum corneum Stratum lucidum Stratum granulosum Stratum spinosum Stratum basale
Layer of epidermis that houses keratinocytes
Stratum granulosum
home to columnal cells
Stratum basale
Layer of dermis containing areolar connective tissue
Papillary layer
Layer of dermis consisting of dense irregular connective tissue; 80% of dermis
Reticular layer
