olfactory nerve (I)
- smell

optic nerve (II)
- vision
- test visual acuity with letter reading chart
- tests visual fields by looking straight and moving things in their visual fields
- tests colour vision with Ishihara plates
- fundoscopy looks at eye anatomy
Oculomotor nerve (III) & trochlear nerve (IV) & abducent nerve (VI)
- eye movements side to side
- dilation of pupil tested by shining light into eye
- adduction of eye is movement away from midline
- horizontal diplopia is double vision
- ptosis is drooping of eyes
trigeminal nerve (V)
- masticatory movements
- asked to clench teeth to test motor supply by looking and feeling muscles (temporals, masseters)
facial nerve (VII)
- facial movement
- asked to stretch forehead and squint eyes against resistive force
- puff cheeks
- biggest smile
vestibulocochlear nerve (VIII)
- hearing
- place tuning fork on mastoid and then next to ear, should find second louder
glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)
- tongue and pharynx
- tests tastes of basic tastes
- test gag reflex
vagus nerve (X)
- heart, blood vessels
- movement of larynx and pharynx
- touching palate for palatal reflex
spinal accessory nerve (XI)
- neck muscles and viscera
- neck and shoulder muscles
- ask to turn head against resistance pressure
- ask to shrug shoulders against resistance
hypoglossal nerve (XII)
- tongue muscles
- stick tongue out does it deviate to one side
bruits
They are abnormal sounds that the blood makes as it passes an obstruction
