The superior and inferior salivatory nuclei in the brainstem contain synapses from which cranial nerve(s)
Glossopharyngeal
Facial
The nucleus ambiguus in the brainstem contains synapses from which cranial nerve(s)

What are some of the functions of the facial nerve?
Motor to muscles of facial expression
Stapedius (in ear)
Parasympathetic to pterygopalatine and submandibular ganglia
Taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue
What are some of the innervations of the glossopharyngeal nerve?
Taste to posterior 1/3 of the tongue
Tactile info of sensation, pain and temperature from posterior tongue
Parasympathetic to otic ganglion (parotid)
Motor to stylopharyngeus
What are some of the innervations of the vagus nerve?
Tactile sensation, pain and temperature of the pharynx, larynx, trachea, oesophagus, thoracic and abdo viscera
Taste epilottis
Parasym to ganglia serving thoracic and abdo viscera
Motor to striated muscle of pharnx and larynx
If someone has damaged their facial nerve, what may then complain of?
Bad taste in mouth (anterior 2/3 taste), poor hearing/off (stapedius muscle), dry eyes (lacrimal gland), bells palsy
If someone has damaged their vestibulococchlear nerve, what may then complain of?
poor hearing in one of their ears
Rinne’s conductive hearing loss
Webber’s sensorineural hearing loss
If someone has damaged their vagus nerve what would you ask them to do to check?
Ask patient to say ahhhhhh and the uvula will point away from the affected side
How would you test for a damaged spinal accessory nerve?
Ask to turn and flex neck
Ask to shrug shoulders
Look for assymetry and power
How would you examine for a damaged hypoglossal nerve?
Ask patient to stick tongue straight out
If moves to a side then that side it points to is effected
