Olfactory: S (smell)
Test: identify familiar smells
Cranial Nerve II
Optic: S (sight)
Test: test visual fields
Cranial Nerve III
Oculomotor: M
Voluntary- levator eyelid, superior/medial/inferior recti, inferior oblique eye muscle
Autonomic- smooth muscle of eyeball
Test: up/down/medial gaze, reaction to light
Cranial Nerve IV
Trochlear: M
Voluntary: superior oblique muscle of eyeball
Test: down/inward glaze
Cranial Nerve V
Trigemical: B (touch, pain- skin of face, mucous membranes of nose, sinuses, mouth, ant. tongue)
Voluntary: mastication muscles
Test: corneal reflex, face sensation, clench teeth
Cranial Nerve VI
Abducens: M
Voluntary: lateral rectus muscle of eyeball
Test: lateral gaze
Cranial Nerve VII
Facial: B (taste- ant. tongue)
Voluntary: facial muscles
Autonomic: lacrimal, submandibular, sublingual glands
Test: squeeze eyes shut, smile & show teeth, whistle/puff cheeks, identify familiar tastes
Cranial Nerve VIII
Vestibulocochlear: S (Hearing and Balance)
Test: hear watch ticking, other hearing tests, balance/coordination tests
Cranial Nerve IX
Glossopharyngeal: B (touch, pain, taste- posterior tongue)
Voluntary: select muscle of pharynx
Autonomic: parotid gland
Test: gag reflex, ability to swallow
Cranial Nerve X
Vagus: B (touch, pain- pharynx, larynx, bronchi: taste- tongue, epiglottis)
Voluntary: muscles of palate, pharynx, larynx
Autonomic: thoracic and abdominal viscera
Test: gag reflex, ability to swallow, say “ahh”
Cranial Nerve XI
Accessory: M
Voluntary: sternoceidomastoid and trapezius
Test: resisted shoulder shrug
Cranial Nerve XII
Hypoglossal: M
Voluntary: muscles of tongue
Test: tongue protrusion (abnormal = tongue will deviate to one side)
