Cranial nerve number 12?
Hypoglossal nerve
Function: sense of smell
Olfactory nerve (1)
Function: provides vision
Optic nerve (2)
Function: controls muscles that turn the eyeball up, down, and medially, as well as controlling the iris, lens, and upper eyelid
- superior rectus, inferior rectus, medial rectus, inferior oblique
Oculomotor nerve
Function: eye movement (superior oblique muscle)
Trochlear nerve (4)
Function: largest of the cranial nerves
- most important sensory nerve in face
-forks into three divisions
Trigeminal nerve (5)
What are the three divisions of the Trigeminal nerve?
- Ophthalmic division (sensory)
- Maxillary division (motor)
- Mandibular division (mixed)
Function: provides eye movement
- controls lateral rectus
- if lateral rectus is paralyzed or damaged, eye will rotate medially
Abducens nerve (6)
Function: major motor nerve of facial muscles: facial expressions; salivary glands and tear, nasal, and palatine glands
-sensory: taste on anterior two-thirds of tongue
- has five branches
Facial nerve (7)
What are the five branches of the facial nerve?
- Temporal
- Zygomatic
- Buccal
- Mandibular
- Cervical
Function: nerve of hearing and equilibrium
- 2 branches
- Vestibular branch: balance
- Cochlear branch: vision
Vestibulocochlear nerve (8)
Function: swallowing, salivation, gagging, control of BP and respiration
- sensation from posterior one-third of tongue
Glossopharyngeal nerve (9)
Function: most extensive distribution of any cranial nerve (travels the furthest)
- major role in control of cardiac, pulmonary, digestive, and urinary function
Vagus nerve (10)
Function: muscle control; head, neck, and shoulder movement
Accessory nerve (11)
Function: tongue movements for speech, food manipulation, and swallowing
- if one side is damaged, tongue deviates toward the injured side
Hypoglossal nerve (12)
