Cranial Nerve 7 Flashcards
Where does the Nervus intermedius reside and what cell fiber types does it contain?
Resides within the geniculate ganlgion carrying general somatic, somatic visceral affarents, and general visceral sensation.
How does the pterygopalatine ganglion recieve innervation and what is its function?
Preganglionic parasympathetic neurons travel through the greater petrosal nerve to the pterygopalatine ganglion.
Here they synapse and terminate in lacrimal glands, nasal mucous membranes, and palatine salivary glands.
This is known as the hay fever ganglion
The pterygopalatine ganglion.
Describe where the submandibular ganglion recieves its innervaion from and what function it has.
Parasympathetic innervation comes from the chordae tympani and synapses in the submandibular ganglion.
This gives rise to post ganglionic parasympathetic nerves supplying the submandibular and sublingual glands.
What causes crocodile tears?
Lesion to facial nerve proximal to geniculate ganglion.
Preganglionic parasympathetic fibers make wrong turn and instead of joining chorda tympani head to greater petrosal nerve terminating in the pterygopalatine ganglion.
Where does the solitary tract project and what is its role?
Carries the taste neurons from CN 7, 9, and 10 to the solitary nucleus. This will then be projected into the hypothalamus for visceral response to unpleasant sensation.
Where does the spinal tract project and what is its role?
Nociception from CN 7,9, and 10 jump onto the spinal tract of CN V and head to the pain nuclei of CNV.
Eventually heads to the VPM in the thalamus.
What makes up the afferent and efferent branches of the corneal blink reflex?
The opthalmic branch of CN V receives the information and sends it to the main sensory nuclei and the spinal nuclei.
These two CN V nuclei sources the project to CN 7 bilaterally.
Bells palsy is a LMN lesion to CN 7 usually will result in what?
The entire half of the face being paralyzed ipsilateral to the lesion
How will damage to the geniculate ligament present?
Presents with pain behind the ear and in the acoustic meatus.
The chordae tympani does what
PArt of CN 7
Provides taste to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue.
What is neuropraxia?
Regeneration of a damaged facial nerve seen in bells palsey 90% of cases will regenerate.
What is Wallerian degerneration?
10% of bells palsey pt will not regenerate infact, the nerve cell axons are lost.
