CN 8, 9 ,10 Flashcards
What is the name of the ganglia containing the primary sensory neurons of the cochlear nerve/
The spiral ganglia laying within the organ of corti.
What function do the dorsal cochlear nuclei have?
Function in vertical sound localization carrying monaural sound across the pontine tegmentum and ascending in the lateral lemniscus to the inferior colliculus.
What function do the ventral cochlear nuclei have?
Horizontal sound localization terminating in the ipsilateral and contralateral superior olivary nuclear complex.
BINURAL PROCESSING.
The dorsal acoustic stria…
Axons ascend via contralateral LL to IC.
The intermediate acoustic striae….
Axons ascend ipsilateral and contralateral LL to the inferior colliculi bilaterally.
The ventral acoustic stria (trapezoid body)…
Synapse to multiple nuclei.
Where are the third order nuclei of the cochlear nerve found?
Found within the Superior olivary nucleus involved in localization from both ears.
Where does the inferior colliculus project to?
Projects to the medial geniculate nucleus in the thalamus for sound intensity and pitch and superior colliculus (for reflexes)
The auditory radiation has what path of travel?
Originates within the thalamus and projects to the primary auditory cortex where sound is first heard.
Where is the auditory cortex found?
Brodmans 41.
Damage to the cochlea, cochlear nerve or cochlear nuclei results in what type of hearing loss?
Results in ipsilateral hearing loss.
Damage rostral to cochlear nuclei results in…?
results in hearing impairments primarily to the contralateral ear.
The dosal motor nucleus of the vagus has what function?
PArasympathetic an preganglionic parasympathetic neruons.
The nucleus ambiguus has what function?
innervates vagal skeletal muscles (larynx and pharynx)
The solitary nucleus has what function in relation to vagus?
Taste!
Shared with facial, glossopharyngeal, and vagus nerves.
