CN V Flashcards
What type of ganglion are housed within the trigeminal ganglia?
Pseudounipolar neurons with no synapses.
The mesencephalic trigeminal sensory nucleus provides what type of sensation?
General proprioception from CN V muscles.
The principal (Mid pons) nuclei provides what type of sensation?
Discriminatory touch and pressure as well as proprioception from the extraocular muscles and TMJ!
(Just like the dorsal column!)
The spinal nuclei sense what sort of sensation?
Where is it found?
Provides pain, temeprature, and some tactile sense.
Pons, medulla, and C1-C2
this is the only CN that has a pain nucleus!!!
A lesion to the Spinal V tract and or Spinal V nucleus would result in loss of what?
Loss of pain and temperature with diminution of tactile sense from the IPSILATERAL orofacial region and GSA teritorry of CN 7,9, and 10 (dont have own pain nuclei)
A lesion to the ventral V lemniscus would lead to what?
Loss of pain and temperature sensation as well as a diminution of tactile sense from the CONTRALATERAL orofacial region and GSA territory of 7,9, and 10.
A lesion to the dorsal V lemniscus would result in what?
Diminution of tactile sense from the IPSOLATERAL orogacial region.
Not total loss of sensation because some fibers from main nucleus ascend in ventral V lemniscus.
What artery can press against the trigeminal nerve leading to trigeminal neuralgia?
Superior Cerebellar Artery!
What reflex would be lost following damage to the opthalmic branch of trigeminal
The coreal blink reflex.
Which nerves hitchhike onto the trigeminal nerve for pain sensation?
Facial
Glossopharangeal
Vagus nerve
**Also processes pain from dorsal rami of upper two cervical levels.
A lesion in the trigeminal motor root will result in jaw deviation …..
To the side of the lesion
what is the function of the mesencephalic nuclei
Proprioception
caintains pseudounipolar neurons!
The dorsal trigeminal lemniscus what type of information and to where?
Carries fine discriminative touch to the VPM from the main sensory nuclei.
DOES NOT CROSS OVER
The ventral trigeminal lemniscus carries what type of information and travels where?
Carries information from the spinal nucleus to the VPM
CROSSES OVER
carries pain, temperature, and some tactile sensation.
The Trigeminal reticulo fibers carry what information and where do they travel?
Travel from both the Main sensory nuclei and the spinal nuclei to the VPM
CROSSES OVER
Plays role in arousal to slapping, stroking, or smelling salts.
