basal ganglia focused Flashcards
What function does the basal ganglia have?
Inhibit involuntary movements at rest (tremors)
Facilitate voluntary movements (initiate, continue, complete action)
This nucleus forms the floor of the lateral ventricles and ends in the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle
Caudate nucleus
What composes the corpus striatum?
The caudate nucleus
and the Lentiform nucleus
What makes up the lentiform nucleus?
Puntamen
and
Globus pallidus
What are the major inputs to the corpus striatum?
Corticostriate
Nigrostriate
Thalamostriate
What are the major outputs from the corpus striatum?
Striatonigral fibers
Striatopallidal fibers
What are the inputsof the pallidum?
Striatopallidal fibers
Subthalamic fasciculus.
What are the outputs from the pallidum?
Pallidothalamic fibers
and
Pallidosubthalamic fibers
Defne dyskinesia
Uninentional purposeless disorderly movements occuring at rest.
Define athetosis
Slow vermicular involuntary movements caused by degeneration of lateral pallidum allowing thalamus to spontaneously fire to motor cortex!
Define hemiballismus
Involuntary ballistic movements on on side of body due to cerebrovascular lesion of ganlial branch of posterior cerebral artery involving th contralateral subthalamic nucleus.
Define bradykinesia
Reduced motion due to increased inhibition from the basal ganglia.
What two signs must be present to define tourettes?
Motor and vocal tics
*Vocal tics are unique to tourettes.
Is thre paralysis when the basal ganglia are lesioned?
NO
