Complications of the DMP Flashcards
What is polyomyelitis?
Viral infection of the spinal cord affecting LMN resulting in LMN signs.
What causes Combined systems disease?
Deficiency in B12 intake or metabolism
What is Combined systems disease characterized by?
Characterized by the degeneration of the dorsal funiculus containing sensory fibers of FG and FC
and
Degeneration of the lateral funiculus containing motor fibers of corticospinal tract
Damage to the dorsal funiculus will present in what manner?
Loss of discriminative touch, two point discrimination, vibratory sense, and proprioception and sensory ataxia.
Damage to the lateral funinculus will present i what manner?
Damage to the corticospinal tract fibers leads to UMN signs (Babinskis sign, hyperreflexia, muscle weakness and spasticity)
What is Brown Sequard syndrome caused by?
Hemisection of the spinal cord
What sensation is lost in Brown Sequard syndrome?
Loss of discriminative sense AT OR BELOW level of lesion ipsilaterally
Loss of pain and temp sensation starting 2 SEGMENTS BELOW LEVEL OF LESION CONTRALATERALLY
Loss of reflexes ipsilaterally
UMN signs below lesion ipsilaterally
LMN at the level of the nerve ipsilaterally.
Which funiculi are supplied blood by the anterior spinal artery?
The anterior and lateral funiculi and most of the gray matter
Which funiculi are supplied blood by the posterior spinal arterys?
There are two.
Dorsal funiculi and posterior part of the dorsal horns.
