Q

What is the leading cause of death in COVID-19?

A
  1. Leading cause of death is resp failure from ARDS

2. Mortality from ARDS in COVID-19 is 39%

20
Q

What is COVID-19 patho?

A

RNA virus, multiple variants

SARS-CoV-2 attaches to ACE2 receptor on target host cells

21
Q

Where is ACE2 expressed?

A

highly expressed in:

  1. upper and lower respiratory tract
  2. myocardial, renal epithelial, enterocytes and endothelial cells of multiple organs
22
Q

A

positive for SARS-CoV-2 viral DNA

23
Q

How do you treat mild/moderate Covid-19?

A

Bed rest, paracetamol, ibuprofen, maintain hydration, monitor O2 sats

24
Q

How do you treat severe COVID-19?

A

Hospital admission, oxygen therapy, VTE prophylaxis, dexamethasone, remdesivir, IL-6 inhibitor eg. tocilzumab OR Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor eg. barictinib
2. consider ICU admission for ventilation, ECMO etc
